How does commission pay work?

Wahid Musawi · Co-founder · TelesalesUpdated 31 Aug 2026
Short answer

Commission pay is payment per result rather than per hour: a fixed amount or percentage for each sale you close, defined in writing before you start. It comes in two broad arrangements, commission on top of a wage, or commission-only, where results are the whole of your pay. Which one you are on changes everything about how a slow month feels.

In short
Commission is defined per result, in writing, before you start.
Employees must get minimum wage from base pay for hours worked; the self-employed have no minimum.
Check the trigger, the timing, leaver terms and clawbacks before accepting anything.

The arrangements, in plain terms

Employed salespeople usually earn a base salary with commission on top, and for employees the law is firm: base pay must meet the minimum wage on its own for hours worked, commission cannot be the thing that drags pay up to legal. Self-employed commission-only work is different in kind: you are not an employee, no minimum applies, and the commission is the entire deal. On this platform both exist, commission-only for experienced closers and a salaried track that guarantees a minimum for hours worked while you learn.

What to check before accepting any commission deal

Four things, in writing: what exactly triggers the commission (an order, a payment, a confirmed sale that survived cooling-off), when it is paid, what happens to commission earned but not yet paid if you leave, and whether cancellations claw it back. Here the trigger is written into every campaign: the customer confirms by SMS, the cooling-off period runs, and the confirmed sale pays. Nothing else does.

The honest downside

Commission concentrates risk on you. A week of good calls that end in almost-sales pays nothing on commission-only, and no amount of framing changes that. That is the trade: no ceiling in exchange for no floor. If you need the floor, take the arrangement that has one.

The structures you will actually meet

Flat per sale: a fixed amount per completed sale, the structure this platform uses, because it is the one a seller can verify from the campaign terms alone. Percentage of value: common where order sizes vary; check what the percentage applies to, list price, collected revenue or margin, because they differ by a third. Tiered: the rate steps up past thresholds, which motivates volume and complicates verification. Draw against commission: an advance recovered from future commission, functionally a loan, and the structure most worth reading twice, since leaving mid-draw can mean owing money. None of these is dishonest in itself; all of them reward reading the definition of “a sale” before signing anything.

Worth knowing

We publish no typical commission figure and no earnings claim, because we will not print a number we cannot substantiate. The campaign terms state the commission before you accept; the earnings page does the arithmetic on assumptions you choose.

Does commission count towards the minimum wage?

For employees, commission counts in the pay reference period it is paid, but an employer cannot use future or unpaid commission to excuse sub-minimum base pay for hours worked. For the self-employed the question dissolves: no employer, no minimum wage, the commission is the whole deal.

What are the disadvantages of commission pay?

Income variance above all: a poor month pays poorly, and on commission-only it can pay nothing. Add verification disputes where “a sale” is loosely defined, clawbacks on cancellations, and the tax admin of self-employment where that applies. The mitigations are boring and effective: written triggers, confirmation-based counting and a cash buffer.

Is commission taxed differently from salary?

No special rate exists. For employees it is taxed as earnings through PAYE, which can feel heavier in a big month before it averages out. Self-employed sellers invoice gross and settle income tax and National Insurance through Self Assessment.
